Gears of War: E-Day Beginner Tips: 14 Things to Know First

Core E-Day tips for new Gears — movement, cover, weapon mods, Tactical Gear, the missable Boot Camp achievement, and which difficulty to pick for your first run.

E-Day is both the oldest story in the series and its newest-feeling game to play. The movement overhaul changes everything, and a first-series weapon mod system means what you carry matters more than ever. These tips cover the things launch-week players wished they’d known before rolling into Kalona — and if you want the ranked gun meta first, jump to our best weapons tier list.

What changed about movement in E-Day?

Movement is the headline overhaul. Sprint is now left-stick click (the legacy scheme is still available as an option), jumping is fully manual, and you can sprint-slide into and under cover. Low cover lets you prone-slide behind it, climbing is unprompted, and levels are built far more vertically than older Gears maps. Unlearn the old rhythm early — holding forward into cover isn’t the default anymore.

How does adaptive cover work?

Almost anything is cover now. You can dive behind shin-high rubble and even shoot while lying on your back. Crucially, cover visibly degrades — walls crumble under fire, so the spot that’s safe in the first ten seconds of a fight may not be in the next ten. Keep moving, and never trust the same barricade for a whole encounter.

Should I chase every yellow Hard Case?

Yes. Hard Cases hold weapon mods — the new-for-E-Day system where each weapon has one Perfect Reload slot plus three general slots. Mods are installed at Supply Caches, and side quests also reward them. There are 36 Supply Caches and 17 Secondary Objectives in the campaign; our achievements guide lists which of those side objectives are permanently missable.

What is Tactical Gear?

Tactical Gear replaces Gears 5’s Jack robot with four cooldown abilities: the Adrenaline Injector, Sonic Disruptor, Stim Vaporizer, and Pulse Drone. The Pulse Drone pairs especially well with the Longshot for marking distant targets. Use them on cooldown — they recharge faster than you think.

Which difficulty should new players pick?

Campaign difficulty runs Casual → Normal → Hardcore → Insane, with Normal as the default. Unless you’ve played a lot of Gears, start on Normal: the 12–18 hour campaign’s checkpoints are tuned around it, and Insane runs are for the “Remember Kalona”-style achievements on a second pass. See how long E-Day takes to beat for what each playstyle commits you to.

What enemies should I prioritize in a fight?

E-Day’s new roster will interrupt you if you ignore it:

  • Bilefrog — spits bile; kill it before it cycles up.
  • Spore Matron — flying, lobs homing spores; burst it early.
  • Gorehook — a heavy that soaks damage.
  • Armored Wretch — it can stun you, and killing the one that stunned you pays the “Payback’s A Pitch” achievement.

Boomers are the classic priority target — and in E-Day you can chainsaw-execute them for the “Okay, Boomer.” achievement. Heavy weapons like the Boomshot they carry are always worth grabbing; the weapons tier list explains why.

Which achievements are missable on a first run?

Two traps to know before you play an hour:

  1. FNG (15G) — finish the prologue’s Boot Camp (Act 1, Chapter 1). Don’t skip the tutorial.
  2. Side Piece (15G) — all 17 Secondary Objectives, four of which are missable in specific chapters.

Chapter select exists, but playing attentively the first time is cheaper. The full missable list is in our achievements guide.

Can I play the campaign in co-op?

Yes — 4-player online co-op with crossplay across Xbox and PC, one player per Bravo Squad member (Marcus, Dom, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes). Console players also get 2-player local split-screen; only the host can pause. The co-op flow changes nothing about these tips, but a squad makes Hardcore much friendlier. Multiplayer-side, Horde Siege is the co-op mode with real depth.

FAQ

Should I play previous Gears games before E-Day?

No — E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original 2006 game, so it’s chronologically the first story. Longtime players will catch more references, but nothing assumes prior knowledge.

Do I need to replay chapters for missables?

Chapter select lets you go back for missable achievements like FNG and the four side objectives in Side Piece. Collectibles (all 140) are never missable for the same reason.

Is Insane difficulty locked at the start?

All four difficulties are reported available from the start, though Insane’s early availability is only confirmed by one secondary source — the achievement list itself confirms Insane exists. Either way, campaign completions do not unlock anything extra on Insane runs besides achievements.

What's the fastest way to earn weapon mods?

Clear Secondary Objectives and open every yellow Hard Case you hear ping. Mods equip at Supply Caches — there are 36 of them, so you’re rarely far from a workbench.
